How to Make Sure Your Oven is Working Properly for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is around the corner, and All Katy Service wants to make sure you’re set up to make a fantastic meal for your friends and family!

One of the biggest complaints we receive is that people’s ovens just up and die on Thanksgiving. This could be because it hasn’t been used in a while, so a problem has gone unnoticed until it’s time to use it again.

We recommend following our advice on checking the status of your oven’s functionality immediately so that if you have any problems, you can call us to perform a diagnostic and possible repair in advance.

Testing Your Oven without a Thermometer

If you don’t have a thermometer handy to test your oven, or you’re skeptical of a current thermometer you have, there is a super simple way you can test your oven to see if it’s running too cold or too hot.

This method involves baking some sugar!

Testing Your Oven for Running Cold:

To start, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature has been reached, you can begin your cold test.

Put some granulated sugar onto a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Once your timer goes off, pull the sugar out.

There are two possible outcomes to this test:

1. The Sugar Melted
2. The Sugar Did NOT Melt

If the sugar melted, then your oven is running heat normally.

If the sugar is NOT melted after 15 minutes, your oven is running cold and you need to call us or visit our page on oven repairs.

Testing Your Oven for Running Hot:

Let your oven cool off completely if you performed the last test. Once your oven is completely cooled, go ahead and preheat it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once again, line a room temperature baking sheet with some aluminum foil, and place some sugar on it. Bake for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, there are two possible outcomes on your sugar bake:

1. The Sugar Melted
2. The Sugar Did NOT Melt

If the sugar is melted, the oven is running too hot and you need to shoot us a call or an email and visit our oven repair page on our website.

If the sugar is NOT melted, or is even a little browned, your oven is running at the right temperature!

What This All Means…

By performing both of these tests, you can check your oven for both running too hot and running too cold. If everything turns out how it should, then your oven is in working order!
